iPhone Charging Problems: 5 Common Causes and How to Fix Them

📅 September 4, 2026 ⏱️ 7 min read 📱 iPhone Repair Nairobi

You plug your iPhone in for the night. You wake up. It's still on 5%. Or maybe it's not charging at all. Or it charges, but only if you hold the cable at a specific angle. If you've experienced any of these iPhone charging problems, you're not alone – and you're probably frustrated.

The good news is that most charging issues are fixable. The bad news is that the fix depends on the cause – and there are several possible causes. In this guide, we'll walk you through the 5 most common causes of iPhone charging problems, how to diagnose them, and what to do next. If you're in Nairobi, we'll also help you get professional help if needed.

🔌 Important: Before you try anything, check your iPhone's Liquid Detection warning. If you see "Liquid detected in Lightning/USB-C port", do not charge. Remove the cable and wait 24–48 hours for the port to dry. Learn more about water damage.

Common iPhone Charging Problem #1: Dirty or Lint-Filled Charging Port

This is the most common cause of iPhone charging problems. Your iPhone lives in your pocket, your bag, or on your desk. Over time, dust, pocket lint, and debris accumulate in the charging port. When you plug in the cable, it can't make a proper connection – so your iPhone doesn't charge.

Symptoms:

  • The cable doesn't click securely into the port.
  • Charging only works when the cable is angled a certain way.
  • The cable falls out easily.
  • You see "Accessory Not Supported" messages.

How to fix it:

  1. Turn off your iPhone before cleaning. Safety first.
  2. Use a wooden or plastic toothpick – never metal, which can damage the pins.
  3. Gently scrape the inside of the port to remove lint and debris. Be careful not to push it deeper.
  4. Use a soft, dry toothbrush to sweep away loosened debris.
  5. Try charging again with a clean, dry cable.

⚠️ Important: Do NOT use compressed air, cotton swabs, or metal objects. Compressed air can push moisture into the phone, cotton swabs leave fibres, and metal objects can short-circuit the port.

Common iPhone Charging Problem #2: Faulty Charging Cable or Adapter

Sometimes the problem isn't your iPhone – it's the cable or charger. Over time, cables fray, bend, and break, especially near the connector. The 18W/20W USB-C chargers that come with newer iPhones can also fail.

Symptoms:

  • Charging works with some cables but not others.
  • The cable shows visible wear, fraying, or discolouration.
  • The charger feels loose or doesn't stay in the socket.
  • You see "This accessory is not supported" errors.

How to fix it:

  1. Try a different cable – Use an original Apple cable or a certified third-party cable (MFi-certified).
  2. Try a different power adapter – Use a different USB power adapter or plug into a computer USB port to test.
  3. Try a different power source – Plug into a wall socket instead of a power strip, or try a different wall socket.

If a different cable and charger work, you've found the culprit. Replace the faulty cable or charger. Always use MFi-certified cables – cheap, uncertified cables can damage your iPhone's charging port.

Common iPhone Charging Problem #3: Software Glitch

Sometimes the problem is in the software, not the hardware. iOS can occasionally get confused and stop responding to charging commands. This is more common than you might think.

Symptoms:

  • Your iPhone doesn't charge, but you know the cable and charger work.
  • Your iPhone shows the charging icon but the percentage doesn't increase.
  • Your iPhone randomly stops charging.
  • The problem started after an iOS update.

How to fix it:

1. Restart Your iPhone

The simplest fix. A restart clears temporary software glitches.

  • iPhone X and newer: Press and hold the side button and either volume button until the power slider appears.
  • iPhone 8 and older: Press and hold the power button until the power slider appears.

2. Force Restart (Hard Reset)

If a normal restart doesn't work, try a force restart:

  • iPhone 8 and newer: Press Volume Up, then Volume Down, then press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.
  • iPhone 7: Press and hold Volume Down + Power button until the Apple logo appears.
  • iPhone 6s and older: Press and hold Home + Power button until the Apple logo appears.

3. Reset Settings

If charging still doesn't work, try resetting your settings: Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset All Settings. This won't delete your data but will reset Wi-Fi passwords, Bluetooth pairings, and other settings.

Note: If software glitches persist, it could indicate a deeper issue. Contact us for a professional diagnostic.

Common iPhone Charging Problem #4: Battery Is Dead (Deep Discharge)

If your iPhone battery is completely drained – to the point where it won't even show the low battery icon – you may need to perform a deep charge.

Symptoms:

  • Your iPhone is completely unresponsive.
  • No charging icon appears when you plug it in.
  • You left your iPhone uncharged for a long period (weeks or months).

How to fix it:

  1. Plug it in and wait – Leave it connected to a known-good charger for at least 30–60 minutes. Sometimes it takes that long for the battery to wake up.
  2. Try wireless charging – If your iPhone supports it (iPhone 8 and newer), try a Qi wireless charger. This bypasses the Lightning/USB-C port.
  3. Check for liquid damage – If your iPhone was exposed to water and then died, follow our water damage guide.

If your iPhone still doesn't charge after 60 minutes, the battery may be permanently dead. We can check your battery health and replace it if necessary.

Common iPhone Charging Problem #5: Hardware Failure (Charging Port or Logic Board)

If you've tried all the above and your iPhone still won't charge, the problem is likely hardware-related. This could be:

  • Damaged charging port – The pins inside the port may be bent, corroded, or broken. This often happens after using cheap cables or dropping the phone while plugged in.
  • Damaged charging flex cable – The cable connecting the port to the logic board may be torn or loose.
  • Logic board damage – The charging IC (integrated circuit) on the logic board may have failed – often due to water damage or a power surge.

Symptoms:

  • No charging even with multiple cables and chargers.
  • Wireless charging works but wired charging doesn't.
  • The port looks damaged, bent, or corroded.
  • Your iPhone gets hot when plugged in (but doesn't charge).
  • You've had water damage or a drop recently.

How to fix it:

Hardware issues require professional repair. At iPhone Repair Nairobi, we can:

  • Diagnose the issue – We'll identify whether it's the port, flex cable, or logic board.
  • Replace the charging port – If the port is damaged, we replace it with a high-quality flex assembly.
  • Repair the logic board – In some cases, we can repair the charging IC at the component level – which is much cheaper than replacing the entire logic board.

Charging port repair starts from KSh 2,000 for most models. Logic board repairs are more complex and require a diagnosis – but we always quote before we start.

For newer models like the iPhone 15, iPhone 16, and iPhone 17, the USB-C port is different from the Lightning port. We have the specialised tools and parts for all models.

Wireless Charging vs. Wired Charging

If your iPhone supports wireless charging (iPhone 8 and newer), and your wired port isn't working, try wireless charging. This can be a lifesaver if you need to charge your phone urgently.

However, wireless charging is slower and generates more heat, which can degrade the battery over time. It's a good temporary solution, but for long-term reliability, we recommend fixing the wired charging port.

If wireless charging doesn't work either, the problem may be with the battery or logic board – not just the port.

How to Prevent iPhone Charging Problems

Prevention is better than cure. Here are some tips to avoid charging issues in the future:

  • Use MFi-certified cables – Cheap cables can damage your port and cause long-term issues.
  • Keep your port clean – Periodically inspect your port and clean it gently if you see lint or debris.
  • Avoid charging while wet – If your iPhone gets wet, wait 24–48 hours before charging.
  • Be gentle with cables – Don't yank cables out; pull from the connector, not the wire.
  • Use a case with a port cover – This can protect your port from dust and debris.
  • Check for software updates – iOS updates often fix charging-related bugs.
