What Makes the iPhone 12 Series Different for Repairs?
The iPhone 12 introduced several changes that affect how repairs are performed:
- All-OLED lineup – unlike the iPhone 11 (which mixed LCD and OLED), every iPhone 12 model uses OLED. This means screen replacements are uniformly more expensive, but the quality and colour accuracy are exceptional.
- Flat-edge design – the display sits flush with the aluminium (12/12 mini) or stainless-steel (Pro/Pro Max) frame, making it more prone to edge cracks if dropped at the wrong angle.
- Ceramic Shield – Apple's ceramic-infused glass on the front offers 4x better drop performance. When it does break, the glass shards can be sharper, and repairs require extra care.
- MagSafe – a ring of magnets around the wireless charging coil. This affects back glass repairs – the magnets must be correctly repositioned or replaced so that MagSafe accessories work properly after the repair.
- 5G connectivity – new antenna bands and mmWave components on US models. Not a repair concern itself, but relevant for signal-related diagnostics.
- LiDAR scanner – on the Pro and Pro Max, this adds a depth-sensing component to the camera system. If it fails, AR apps and low-light autofocus are affected.
- Four models – the 12 mini (5.4″), 12 and 12 Pro (6.1″), and 12 Pro Max (6.7″). Different screen sizes require different parts.
Key fact: All iPhone 12 models have OLED screens, but sizes differ: 5.4″ (mini), 6.1″ (12 & 12 Pro), 6.7″ (Pro Max). We quote screen repairs based on the exact model – a 12 Pro Max screen is significantly more expensive than a 12 mini screen.
Common iPhone 12 Series Repairs – Detailed
1. Screen Replacement (OLED & Ceramic Shield)
Despite Ceramic Shield's durability, drops still crack screens. The flat edges mean that impact on the corners often transfers directly to the glass. We offer three tiers:
- Premium OEM-grade OLED – colour-calibrated with True Tone, auto-brightness and HDR support.
- Hardened OLED – a tougher aftermarket option that retains high brightness and colour accuracy.
- Original pulled OLED screens – genuine Apple displays from donor devices, when available.
After a screen replacement, we run a full calibration test – checking the proximity sensor, ambient light sensor, and the TrueDepth camera for Face ID. The iPhone 12 screen is paired to the logic board, so we use specialised tools to transfer serial numbers where required.
2. Battery Replacement
The iPhone 12 series batteries are compact but powerful. After 2–3 years of daily use, battery health often drops below 80%, causing performance throttling and shorter screen-on time. Rated capacities:
- iPhone 12 mini: 2,227 mAh
- iPhone 12: 2,815 mAh
- iPhone 12 Pro: 2,815 mAh
- iPhone 12 Pro Max: 3,687 mAh
We replace with high-quality, tested cells that support the Battery Health indicator. We also calibrate the new battery by running a full charge-discharge cycle.
3. Face ID Repair
The TrueDepth camera system on the iPhone 12 is similar to the 11 series but housed in a slightly smaller notch. Face ID failures can stem from:
- A damaged front flex cable (common after screen or drop damage).
- Moisture or dust affecting the dot projector.
- Logic board–level issues (rare, but possible).
Critical: Face ID is cryptographically paired to the logic board. Replacing the front camera without proper calibration will permanently disable Face ID. We use advanced programming tools to transfer the original serial numbers.
4. Charging Port & MagSafe Repair
The Lightning port on the iPhone 12 can accumulate dust, lint or oxidation. Symptoms include intermittent charging, slow charging, or no response when plugged in.
MagSafe is a new consideration. If your iPhone 12 charges wirelessly but not via Lightning, the port is likely the issue. If MagSafe charging is weak or inconsistent, the back glass might have been replaced incorrectly, misaligning the magnets. We check and realign MagSafe components during back glass repairs.
5. Camera Repair
The iPhone 12 and 12 mini have a dual 12MP wide and ultra-wide camera. The 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max add a telephoto lens and, on the Pro Max, a larger sensor with sensor-shift OIS. Common camera issues:
- Blurry or out-of-focus photos.
- Black preview or camera app crashing.
- OIS failure causing shaky video (especially on Pro Max).
- Scratched or cracked lens cover glass.
- LiDAR failure affecting AR apps and Night Mode portrait photos.
We diagnose each lens individually. We test all lenses, flash, portrait mode and night mode after repair.
6. Back Glass Replacement (with MagSafe)
The iPhone 12 series has a glossy glass back (12/12 mini) or a matte glass back (Pro/Pro Max). A cracked back glass not only looks bad but can compromise water resistance and expose internal components.
We use a professional laser removal machine to detach the broken glass without damaging the wireless charging coil or the MagSafe magnet ring. After replacement, we test MagSafe alignment with a compatible charger to ensure proper function.
7. Speaker & Earpiece Repair
The iPhone 12 series has stereo speakers. Common issues include muffled sound, crackling, or complete loss of audio. We inspect and clean the speaker grilles first; if that doesn't restore sound, we replace the affected speaker module.
8. Water & Liquid Damage Assessment
The iPhone 12 series carries an IP68 water resistance rating – up to 6 metres of water for up to 30 minutes. But the rating degrades with age, drops, or previous repairs. If your iPhone 12 has been exposed to water, corrosion can damage the logic board, speakers, or Face ID components.
What Affects the Repair Price?
- Model: Screen sizes and battery capacities vary – a 12 Pro Max screen is the most expensive.
- Part quality: We offer standard, premium and original pulled parts – each with a different warranty.
- Labour complexity: Back glass (with MagSafe alignment) and Face ID repairs require more time and specialised tools.
- Additional damage: Liquid damage or frame bends increase complexity.
Is It Worth Repairing an iPhone 12 in 2026?
Absolutely. The A14 Bionic chip is still highly capable, 5G connectivity is now widespread in Nairobi, and the camera system remains excellent. A screen or battery replacement can easily give your iPhone 12 series device another 2–3 years of reliable use – at a fraction of the cost of a new phone.
With iOS 18 still supported and many users keeping their phones longer, repairing an iPhone 12 is both economical and environmentally responsible. We see many Nairobi residents choosing repair over upgrade because the 12 series still feels premium and fast.
What to Do Before Bringing Your iPhone In
- Back up your data – iCloud or computer. We are not responsible for data loss.
- Note your Apple ID password – we may need to disable Find My iPhone for some repairs.
- Remove your SIM card and any case or screen protector.
- List any issues – e.g., "MagSafe charging is intermittent" – so we can test specifically.
